The Sound
of Brummell

A Conversation between Lisa Trinker, Movement‘s Managing Director and Anne-Sophie Rosell, Brummell’s Brand Director. “The Sound of Brummell: Curating the Perfect Vibe” is as much a part of its identity as its design. We’re talking about the carefully curated playlist that sets the tone from the moment you step in. In this interview, Brummell’s Brand Director Anne-Sophie Rosell sits down with Lisa Trinker, Managing Director of Movement, the service behind the magic—those responsible for turning Brummell’s atmosphere into an unforgettable soundtrack. From hidden gems to timeless beats, we explore the music that makes Brummell feel like home.

How did you start building the actual sound of Brummell? What was your approach when curating the very first playlists?

L.T

To start with, I’d like to mention that Hotel Brummell was our very first client, which made the beginning of our collaboration incredibly special. I quickly realised how central music was to Christian, to you, and to the brand experience you were striving to create. There was a strong mutual understanding and a lot of creative exchange happening. Being based in the same city also allowed us to have regular meetings. I remember we used to meet almost every other week during the opening phase.

A.S.R

For me, as a music lover and having developed the Movement app with Fred before joining Brummell,
it was key to bring the service to the hotel and see how the music identity could come to life within
the space.

L.T

It was, of course, an incredible help that you knew Movement and the hotel so well. You shared many insights with us, and in parallel, it was about soaking up the atmosphere, making a conscious effort to experience the space through the eyes of your guests. From the moment they arrive, guests begin to develop their own rhythm, and the music is there to accompany them throughout the day, from having breakfast on the patio to returning after a busy day in the city, to relaxing by the pool, and so on. So, the playlist journey truly began with an immersive exploration of Brummell’s unique essence — something that still feels pure today. From the very beginning, we were inspired by its laid-back, design-forward atmosphere: an urban oasis infused with Mediterranean soul. Our goal was to make the music feel just as thoughtfully curated as the space itself, capturing that distinctive blend of tropical warmth and Scandinavian cool that defines Brummell’s identity.

A.S.R

I think you captured that so well. You translated the identity of the place, not just the brand and image, but also the way it lives, the guests it attracts, and the overall vibe.

How does music help define the guest experience at Brummell?

L.T

Generally, I believe music is like the invisible design element of a space – you don’t necessarily see it, but you feel it instantly. It speaks strongly to the senses, much like the lighting, temperature or scent of a place. Music plays an essential role in setting the mood of the hotel, it definitely shapes the atmosphere and ultimately becomes part of the memory.

A.S.R

Exactly — every time I walk into the hotel, surrounded by design pieces, colours, and the energy of the team, the music feels like a natural extension of that environment, its eclecticism. It completes the experience, transporting you into this unique universe. I also love how you are always so proactive.
Instead of sending a classic newsletter with news about the hotel, you said, “Hey, about we send music news to your guests with a quarterly music selection?”. We loved that, it was very smart and is still very much relevant.

L.T

In fact, you, as the Brand Manager back then, were a driving force, because these projects thrive on collaboration. There needs to be commitment from the hotel side and a sense of curiosity. With the music newsletters, we get to spotlight emerging artists and deliver a bespoke, quarterly selection to your subscribers, whether they are guests, friends, supporters, or partners. It’s a great way to engage and extend the Brummell experience beyond just the visuals. No matter where listeners are in the world, they can open the newsletter, hit play on the Spotify playlist, and feel instantly transported to Brummell.

How do you keep the music fresh, even after 10 years? What’s your process like now? Are you still making tweaks or discovering new tracks that end up in the rotation?

L.T

Absolutely. The Brummell brand is constantly evolving—and so is the music. We update the mix monthly, not just with new releases, but also by digging up forgotten gems. We want to reflect its international character and global outlook, but also try to represent its local roots. We are especially excited when we find upcoming talents that align with Brummell’s spirit. Sometimes also Christian sends us tracks he loves and finds relevant, spanning different decades—from the ‘70s and ‘80s to the early 2000s.

A.S.R

Yes, and I always love seeing how Christian reacts to the selections you send. He has such a keen sense for detail, and his input has really helped shape the Brummell sound over the years.

L.T

And the other way round, we love receiving his feedback!

If Brummell had an anthem, what would it be and what does the Brummell soundtrack feel like to you today, 10 years in?

L.T

That’s a tough question because the Brummell soundtrack is so eclectic. But to capture this journey, we’ve put together a “Best Of” compilation featuring 100 tracks from the past 10 years that we find reflect best the sound experience. The sound has evolved, but its core identity remains the same: a mix of feel–good indie pop, modern chanteuses, and soulful grooves blended with notes of tropical sounds and world music.

A.S.R

I love this 10–year retrospective, and I can’t stop listening to it. It’s a way to bring the Brummell spirit home, even when we’re far away. Music has truly become a brand pillar for us, and that’s thanks to you. We’re incredibly proud of our partnership. Every time I get an email from you or Made, I can’t help but wonder, “What have they prepared for us this time?”

L.T

Yes, and that’s the beautiful thing – the music isn’t just a soundtrack to a stay, it’s a part of the brand’s identity that travels with guests long after they’ve checked out. Pitching ideas is one thing, but it’s truly rewarding when that effort is met with real enthusiasm. That kind of energy and openness to evolve are such important parts of the Brummell brand. And, of course, it all comes down to the team. The fact that you, Julia, Alma, and so many others have stayed or returned over the years says a lot. You’ve built a strong, aligned team that moves in the same direction – and that’s a powerful recipe for success.
Happy 10th anniversary, guys!
